Restaging Monument

The photo-collage series is juxtaposing family archive photographs from the 1950ies showing the artist Vinko Matkovic working on the large scale socialist-realist clay and bronze figures for the Monument of Liberation in public space of the city of Rijeka, in his studio and Margans' own body in physical action.

The work examines the role of public monuments, reconsidering the relationship between history and power embodied in them and their effect on everyday social interaction and language. Monuments are perceived to contain performative and discursive material.
